THE FOUNDATION BIKE INITIATIVEBy stephan on Jul 13 2011, last modified on Feb 09 2012.FOUNDATION BIKE PROGRAM TRANSFORMING GHANA BY AFFORDABLE TRANSPORT FROM DONORS TO THE FOUNDATION: HOW BICYCLES CAN HELP GIRLS LEARN MISSION: HELPING THE POOR TO PEDAL THEIR WAY TO A BETTER LIFE AND GIVING POOR CHILDREN AND POORER COMMUNITIES THE GIFTS OF INDEPENDENCE AND OPPORTUNITY. It’s a simple solution to a much bigger problem: young girls in the Shai Hills (Doryumu) area of The Dangme West District in the Greater Accra Region have lots of chores to do like going to fetch water for cooking and washing walking long distance carrying buckets which leaves them no time to walk the two or three hours to school so they don’t get an education and end up having babies at a super young age More about Foundation bike…It’s one of our public spirited basic needsprogram designed with a primary initiative to donatebicycles toschools, healthcare workers, organizations, and individuals who can directly benefit from the transportation virtues of a free bicycle. After having a critical look at your bicycles on website, it turns out that your bikesaregreat and will be essential for those looking for a durable, affordable, easy riding bike that can cruise everything from the bad roads to bumpy back roads. TWO WHEELS TO A BETTER LIFE IN GHANA. PURPOSES OF THE BIKES: Many students here in the villages walk miles to school. There is no public transportation. Many of the students, especially girls, have to quit school at a young age to instead help their families. The program will also address how bicycles are integral in providing children an education. In some parts of Ghana, after the age of 14, children need to commute much greater distances to continue their studies. A 15-mile commute is normal; what would be a short recovery ride for most recreational riders can be an unmanageable commute to a better life, without a bicycle. The bikes will cut the students' commute time, allowing them to continue their education and still have time to help out at home. The free bikes gift will be much more than bicycles - it's a sustainable investment in improving students' futures. Once poorer communities and villages master their riding skills, bikes means students can get to school and get an education. The success of this program will decide how women will be treated in the future once they become educated and make decisions on their own, Empowering the girls and women to seize the opportunity to start riding. They just need the bikes and someone to believe in them to get them started why this project has been put in place by The Foundation of Hope. By having access to a bike, a person/peasant farmer can take their produce, whether it is fruit, vegetables or fish to the market, which is often a day’s walk away, The already fewer Doctors and nurses are able to cover a far greater area to give life saving vaccines, treatments and health education. By having a bike, a nurse can not only get treatments and vaccines to people faster, she or he can also cover a far greater area leaving more clinic time for more complex treatments and minor surgeries.” Being able to make crucial repairs can be as important as just getting the bikes to those who need them. The program won’t only be looking to donate or give bicycles, but also the knowledge to maintain and even repair bicycles to women and girl child in Ghana. . The bikes, when donated will be used community and village wide by healthcare workers who are involved in education and care of people affected by diseases, an example in particular HIV/AIDS. The bikes won’t just be donated to individuals, schools or organization; it will rather break the cycle of poverty through building a strong leadership team that creates their own bicycling social network, job training and consistent access to affordable, quality transportation bicycles. So the question we need to keep in mind is: How life changing is the program to women and girls in Ghana? I think with all the realistic purposes given free bikes will go a long way changing and impacting many lives in Ghana The Foundation will decide how many bikes goes to a particular project/community/village/ organization/school/health post/individual, with the stipulations that as many girls as boys should get them, and that students needed to live at least 5km away from school. For their part, they will be taught maintenance skills in order to maintain bikes and return the bike to the school at the completion of school or bike be used in another program. THE RESULT The reward of knowing you are always helping poorer people and villages get education is immeasurable. It will help create a better balance of resources and offering bikes as a means for children and women to learn same time a great way to help spread those resources in an effort to make the communities and villages a more balanced place. The long term results or benefits of this program will see a huge increase in the number of kids wanting to attend school due to the bike program. We will see boys wanting to help teach girls how to ride for the first time. The girls needs the support of the boys and the entire village to make this program work, so this is a step in the right direction and will also foster peace among the youth. The program will also teach the communities about sharing and equal opportunities. Finally, we will use bikes as a tool or vehicle for change in whatever school, village or individual who receives bikes and it will help break the cycle of poverty by: a) Improving health as bike riding is regular exercise. b) Developing communities in many ways, time saving, serving as transport or carriers when going farming. Same time will increase food production. c) Creating employment and income generation. d) Ensuring communities and individuals saving money and improving the standard of living of the people e) Impacting more children gaining access to school with no excuse of absent from school due to distance from home to school. f) Reducing social vices like child theft, child abuse, internet scams and child pornography.
