Citizen journalists agree to the ethical principles outlined in
the following Code of Conduct.
Accuracy, Accountability, and Responsibility
Ensure the accuracy of your stories and comments by correcting mistakes and
inaccuracies, as they become known to you. Follow the evolution of your story
in the community so that you can review and comment on new information, changes,
or outcome. Do not post content that you know to be untrue, false, or misleading.
Fairness
Present a balanced view of the issues you are communicating in your stories and
comments by interviewing a variety of news sources to ensure that you respect
all other views on an issue.
Transparency
Acknowledge any personal bias or interest, financial or otherwise, in a story
or comment. When you have an interest in a story and acknowledge it upfront,
you help others to understand your views and build trust in your reporting.
Respect The Contributors and The Community
The ethic of reciprocity or the Golden Rule is applicable in effective, responsible
citizen journalism: do unto others as you would have done unto you. Do not unnecessarily
or harshly criticize contributors or members of the community in your reporting.
Promote Interactivity, Present Solutions and Dialog
The Citizen is a resource that supports authentic community dialog, collaboration, and
solutions. Invite others in the community to present their views and present viable
solutions, rather than just highlighting problems. In this way, our individual contributions
to the Citizen make the most positive impact.
Acknowledge Your Sources
Your integrity as a citizen journalist depends on creating and developing your own content
and acknowledging your source material. Do not plagiarize the work of others or use content
that belong to others without their express permission.
Represent Yourself To News Sources As A Citizen Journalist
By acknowledging your status as a citizen journalist, you help shape an honest news
story from your sources. Do not misrepresent who you are to obtain a story.
Obtain Your Content Through Lawful Means
Respect the local, provincial and federal laws and the Terms of Service
of the Citizen in gathering sources and creating citizen journalism content.
